Homemade Goo Gone

Over the summer, I made my own homemade goo gone.  I used to buy goo gone from the store until I read the back of the bottle and all the warnings and ingredients, YIKES!

Mostly, I use goo gone in my house to remove unwanted stickers from items including plates, cups, jars, spray bottles and many other items.

Don't have time to make your own goo gone and want a natural solution?  You can now purchase my natural sticker and goo remover in my Etsy shop --> Click here!  You can even purchase my lavender scented version here!

There are many versions on the internet to make your own goo gone.  Basically, you will need an oil to soak into the sticker and a gentle abrasive to work at removing the sticker.  Here is my version, which is very simple:

Ingredients:

Baking Soda in cup
1/3 cup baking soda

Dr. Bronner's Coconut Oil
1/3 cup coconut oil (I used Dr. Bronner’s)

Lavender Essential Oil 10ml - Simple is Pretty Etsy Shop

Essential oil (optional) - Choose whatever scent you enjoy.  Check out my Etsy shop for 100% Pure Essential oils to scent your goo gone naturally.

Jar to put homemade goo gone in
A small jar (for storing your new goo gone)

Method:

1. Measure about 1/3 cup of coconut oil into a glass measuring cup.  Put it in the microwave for a few seconds (time will vary depending on the microwave used).  You will want the coconut oil to become a liquid, but not hot.

measuring cup with coconut oil
2. Add in 1/3 cup of baking soda to the coconut oil.  Stir till combined and all the lumps are gone.  Add a few drops of essential oil if you desire.  I like the smell of the coconut oil, so I did not use essential oil to scent my goo gone.

3. Pour the combined mixture into a jar to store.  Let it cool to room temperature and it will become a paste.

4. Once the goo gone becomes a paste, it will be easy to spread on stickers or sticker residue to remove them.  I use a paper towel to grab some from the jar and spread where I need it.  I wait a few minutes for the oil to soak in and then you will need to rub the mixture in with the paper towel to remove the sticker.

After:

I find it works better if most of the paper from the sticker has been removed, but it will also work if it is not fully removed.  I no longer use the store bought version of goo gone.  My homemade version works just as well for what I use it for, which is mostly stickers.  Plus, I love how I can leave it in a drawer in my kitchen and feel safe knowing harsh chemicals are not involved in this recipe.  Something I could not do with the store bought version.

    1. I agree, I hate when companies put them on things. And they usually pick the worst spot or the most noticeable spot to stick them and then it is is so hard to get off! Definitely give this a try :)

  8. It always annoys me when the put the stickers in the most noticeable spot! Thanks for this recipe. Goo Gone is toxic and can wreck stuff too (from personal experience)! Pinning!

  9. What a great idea! I love my goo gone, but I think I would love this more. Coconut really is a miracle oil, isn't it? You can use it for just about anything!

  10. I just use of little coconut oil without the backing soda. Just takes a tiny dab.

    1. Definitely, using just coconut oil will also work :) I like to add the baking soda for a little added scrubbing power for the tougher goo and gunk. Thanks for visiting!

  11. Can any type of oil be substituted? I can't stand the smell of coconut.

    1. Vickie,
I'd give another oil a try. You may need to ratio of baking soda to the oil depending on how liquid the oil is. Coconut works well because at room temperature the oil and baking soda create a paste. This recipe works the best when you can leave the mixture soak in to the paper or sticky residue for a while. It works really well if you have time to leave it sit overnight to work and soak. Hardly any scrubbing was required when I leave it overnight. Let me know how it works when you substitute another oil :)

  12. Hi Sandra, I've used this recipe several times and it works great, except I have one stubborn label that won't come off. I tore the paper part of the label off to leave just the adhesive, but the adhesive just won't come off. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks,
    Dianne

    1. Dianne, glad to hear this recipe is working great for you! I haven't had a label that hasn't come off using this recipe when I let it sit overnight. You may want to give peanut butter a try. What surface is the sticker on? (glass, wood, plastic?) Let me know solution ends up working for you :)

  15. I followed the recipe but once it was room temp it turned hard, not a paste. Any suggestions?

    1. Thanks for your question, Corliss. I usually use a paper towel and rub a small amount of goo gone on the towel then apply it to the item that needs the goo gone's attention. The coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but still usually a soft, malleable solid. If the goo gone does get too hard to get out of the jar, you could try storing it in a slightly warmer area or microwave the glass jar without the lid for a few seconds before using. Hope this helps!

  16. These days I buy baking soda in six pound bags. Frequently either the checkout clerk or another customer will ask how come I need so much. They usually regret it because I proceed to bend their ears reciting all the ways baking soda can be used besides baking. So thanks for just one more tip I can inflict on my hapless public.
